ABOUT THE ÖVGD

The ÖVGD, the Austrian Association of Court Interpreters and Sworn Translators, was founded in 1920 and is the only professional association for this industry in Austria. The ÖVGD is the official contact for the Austrian Ministry of Justice in matters relating to legal interpreting and legal translation.

Please mind: Take advantage of selecting interpreters and translators directly from the members database, since for organisational reasons, the secretariat does not accept inquiries for interpreting or translation services. A printed version of the members directory is also available for download.

The ÖVGD offers a host of services to its members (advice on fee issues, CPD activities, educational material), publishes electronic newsletters and the "Mitteilungsblatt" bulletin.

The ÖVGD Forum is the association’s platform for informal exchanges among members.

The ÖVGD has adopted a code of professional ethics which is binding upon members. Compliance is monitored by a disciplinary committee.

The ÖVGD is an expert member of the ASI Language Service Providers Committee participating in the creation of national and international standards for the language industry (ISO 17100 Translation Services, ISO 20228 Legal Interpreting, ISO 20771 Legal Translation, ISO 18587 Post-Editing).

The ÖVGD is member of:

  • EULITA (European Legal Interpreters and Translators Association)
  • FIT (International Federation of Translators)
  • FVB ÖStA (National Association of Austrian Registrars)
  • Hauptverband der Gerichtssachverständigen (National Association of Sworn and Court-Certified Experts in Austria reflecting the fact that expert witnesses and legal interpreters/translators are governed by the same laws (Sachverständigen- und Dolmetschgesetz, Gebührenanspruchsgesetz).
